July 31, 2023, is the date when San Leandro's eviction moratorium finally comes to an end.

Initially, the San Leandro City Council approved an ordinance extending the City's eviction moratorium until February 28, 2024, making its eviction ban the longest in the nation.

Yet the City Council had a change of heart on Monday, May 15 by voting to sunset its moratoria.

Moving forward, San Leandro's Economic Development team will draft the proposed ordinance on June 5 to bring the moratorium to a  close, and barring any material changes, the City Council will reconvene on June 20 to vote on a second reading of the ordinance, with the expectation that the final end date being July 31, 2023.

In lockstep with Alameda County's eviction moratorium end date of May 1, 2023. Still subject to the provisions of statewide rent and eviction controls spelled out in AB-1482.


This was the last remaining locale in Alameda County to wind down moratoria and it's been an exercise in democracy as many vocal housing providers and their advocates have shown up and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to convince policymakers that enough is enough.
