Hasty Oakland proposals put on hold, more thoughtful approach underway

In our last blog and the ensuing email broadcast we sent, we joined a chorus of landlords who took issue with an attempt by some lawmakers to ram through many changes to the City’s Tenant Protection Ordinance, Just Cause for Eviction Ordinance, and Rent Ordinance under the guise of an emergency COVID-19 response.

The clandestine agenda was to be discussed in a virtual meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 21 at 1:30 PM. The public was given very little notice, but it didn’t fall under the radar of astute landlord advocacy groups.

With the item taken off the calendar to allow for more input and deliberation, a committee will revisit the matter on May 12th. If the committee gives the nod, it will go before the full City Council at a later time.

We trust that with new transparency, the 60+ contemplated amendments that are the darling of tenants' advocates will be defeated. You can do your part by contacting Oakland officials or using the East Bay Rental Housing Association’s online tool to contact all council members.

Of course, you can count on Bornstein Law for continued updates germane to owners and real estate professionals in Oakland and throughout the Bay Area.
